This state-of-the-art facility combines traditional library services with cutting edge technology. The Albany Park Branch is the first of the Chicago Public Libraries to include a self-checkout station and is one of six new library locations with YOUmedia digital programming for teens. The library was developed based on a prototypical design and includes book stacks, reading areas, study rooms, a computer media room, a community room, administrative offices and work areas, as well as a green roof.

The HVAC design includes energy-efficient variable volume air handling unit with hot water heating and DX cooling, high-efficiency condensing boilers, and a condensing unit with digital scroll compressors. Demand Control Ventilation control, via C02 sensors, is utilized in each zone to minimize outside air loads and reduce building energy consumption. Building mechanical, lighting, and plumbing systems are tied into a central Building Automation System (BAS).

The lighting system is designed with energy-efficient light fixtures.  Comprehensive lighting control methods are used to maximum energy savings.  Daylight harvesting is placed in perimeter spaces with windows.  Multi-level lighting zones are designed to provide flexible lighting scenes and allow occupants to have controllability. Full cutoff exterior light fixtures are used to meet Dark Sky requirements.

The plumbing design includes only high water reduction fixtures with flow rates as low as 0.35 GPM, without giving up modern design and comfort. The upper roof section is part of a rain harvesting system that is used for drip irrigation and green roof maintenance. The project is designed to be certified under LEED© NCv2009.
