The Consumers Energy Employee Development Center (EDC) is a state-of-the-art, three story, 31,000 sf training center and office building along the west bank of the Grand River in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The first floor contains general meeting areas, energy exhibits, lobbies, and classrooms. The second floor contains additional classrooms and breakout areas. The third floor contains conference rooms and executive offices while the fourth floor contains space for mechanical equipment as well as general storage. In partnership with Catalyst Partners, dbHMS was contracted by Consumers Energy to provide mechanical, electrical, and plumbing Commissioning Services, Measurement & Verification for Ongoing Commissioning, Building Enclosure Commissioning Services, and Building Enclosure Testing Services.

The Downtown Market is a mixed-use facility located on an old brownfield site in a historic neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Market features a 24-vendor market hall, an outdoor farmers' market shed, rentable incubator kitchens, rooftop greenhouses, meeting rooms, offices, eateries, and the nation’s first demonstration kitchen for kids.

The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) is a public interest legal advocacy organization advancing clean energy, green transportation, and the preservation of natural places in the Midwest. ELPC wanted a cutting-edge green facility for their new headquarters located on the 16th floor at 35 E. Wacker, known as the Jewelers Building, a Chicago Landmark.

The Green Exchange is the country’s first commercial real estate development designed for the advancement of green businesses. This 220,000 sq. ft. development is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED©) Core and Shell Platinum building that houses “green” tenants and has historic landmark status. The unique location offers close proximity to public transportation making it convenient for employees and patrons and provides visibility to over 350,000 people per day. The project includes solar thermal panels for absorption cooling as well as heating domestic hot water. Other sustainable features include extensive rain water capture and reuse systems, green roofs, a high-efficiency heating and chilled water plant, and energy recovery systems to optimize energy and resource use. The project has been featured in Newsweek, New York Times, Chicago Tribune and several other publications, as well as television news reports.

RADIO FLYER CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS & PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY

dbHMS was the design engineer for this 60,000 sq. ft. conversion of Radio Flyer’s old manufacturing facility into a LEED© NCv2009 Platinum corporate headquarters and product development laboratory in collaboration with Gensler. Using our strong background in sustainable design, dbHMS performed several energy modeling studies to determine the most efficient building systems. The project employs geothermal heat pumps with assistance from solar thermal both on the air side and the water side. The old saw-tooth form of the building's roof was used to enhance daylighting, and its impact was incorporated into the MEP design by using daylight simulation studies. The project also incorporates rainwater harvesting, displacement ventilation, and energy recovery. The project is a good example of combining existing technologies in a creative combination for best performance results.

Midwest Gaming’s new 600,000 sq. ft. casino in Des Plaines, Illinois is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED©) Gold Certified casino in the world. The $445 million casino and entertainment complex consists of 50,000 sq. ft. of gaming floor 100,000 sq. ft. of back-of-the-house operations and a 450,000 sq. ft. parking structure.

SPECTRUM HEALTH, INTEGRATED CARE CAMPUS AT EAST BELTLINE

The Spectrum Health Integrated Care Campus at East Beltline is a new $48 million, 140,000 sq. ft. medical care facility located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The center serves to consolidate seven existing northeast Grand Rapids office facilities belonging to Spectrum Health, involving about 200 employees.
