Since 1998, the Chicago Park District has been transforming the old Indiana Railroad yard located along the edge of the South Branch of the Chicago River and Chinatown Community into an impressive rolling green space with community gathering areas, athletic ball field, children’s playground, and Chinese landscape design elements.
Included in this redevelopment and expansion program is the new Ping Tom Park Memorial Fieldhouse. The new fieldhouse was delivered by Wight & Company as a Design/Build project. The program includes a gym and six-lane pool as well as meeting rooms and a workout area. A roof deck and canopy add pizazz to the design and sets it apart from the Chicago Park District Prototype Fieldhouse.
dbHMS performed Mechanical Commissioning of the geothermal system, heat pumps, 100% fresh air unit, and dedicated pool de-humidifying system. For Building Enclosure Commissioning, dbHMS performed reviews of design drawings, submittals, and pre-checked the enclosure elements. Construction field inspections of the air/water barrier, sealants, and roofing verified that the enclosure elements were installed according to the contract documents. The building was pressure tested for air-tightness upon completion. The project earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED©) NCv2009 Platinum level certification.
